Lab will be held in the Geology Building, Room 2106, Monday and Wednesday 12:00-15:00, June 4-July 15.

Required Text: Exercises in Physical Geology, 12th Edition, W. Kenneth Amblin and James D. Howard
Other required items: calculator, pencil

Course format and grade information:

Quizzes: With the exception of the first lab of the semester, each lab will begin with a brief quiz that will cover:

1) material from last week's lab, and

2) material from the preparatory reading for that week's lab exercise.

There are no make-up quizzes, so it is essential to be on time to the lab.

Introductory Information: Following quiz collection, the TA will give a brief introduction to the day's lab exercise.

Activities and completing the Lab Handout: After the lecture is over, you will receive a HANDOUT that you will then complete, working with your lab partners. Working together in the lab is encouraged, but each student is responsible for their own work. Quizzes and tests must be completed independently – that is, no help from or help to anyone else. With the lab activities, however, you will benefit from interacting with your fellow students. The handout is due at the end of the lab period.

Clean-Up: When you are finished, clean up your area, and put away any materials that you have used. It is essential to leave the lab as clean as, or cleaner than, it was when you arrived.

Homework: You will be assigned reading that is to be completed before the next class. You will be quizzed on this homework reading.

Statement on Disabilities:  If you have a documented disability and wish to discuss academic accommodations with me, please contact me as soon as possible.

What is expected of you, the student:

 arrive to class on time

work in a focused and independent manner

work cooperatively with lab partners when appropriate

seek help from the TA if you need it

behave in a manner appropriate to a mature student

turn off cellular telephones, ipods, etc,  when in the lab

eat before or after coming to lab (not in the lab)

do the required reading prior to class to prepare you for each week’s lab

missed classes will only be excused if the student can produce valid documentation for their absence or for a religious observance

no make up quizzes;  labs and exams missed due to an excused absence must be made up in order to receive credit

Grading:

40% weekly lab exercises (10 exercises)

20% quizzes (10 quizzes)

20% midterm examination

20% final examination

General lab schedule:
As each lab approaches, relevant study guides, presentations, and worksheets will be made available.  Changes may be made to the syllabus to accomodate the short nature of the summer session. I will inform you in class of changes and post them here.
