Geosciences Research: Institutions ranked by citations and citation impact

Recently, Science Watch (vol. 12, no. 6, NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2001) identified the most-cited Geosciences Institutions, Researchers, and Journals of the last 10 years, using data from the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) Essential Science Indicators. The University of Maryland ranks # 22 among all institutions world wide, and # 14 among universities, based on the average number of citations per paper. These rankings are based on papers published and cited in more 300 ISI-Indexed Geosciences Journals between 1991 and June of 2001. Among the 15 most cited Geosciences journals, based on total citations rather than citations per paper, are: Journal of Geophysical Research; Geophysical Research Letters; Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta; Geology; Earth and Planetary Science Letters; Tectonophysics; Geophysical Journal International; and, Chemical Geology.
