The velocity structure beneath continents

The velocity structure beneath continents is not known to be more complicated than previously thought, containing a mid-lithospheric discontinuity across which velocity decreases sharply within the lithosphere (see, for example, Fischer et al. 2010). By analyzing sub-continental shear velocity profiles from a recent global tomographic model (SEMum: Lekic and Romanowicz, 2011), we have mapped both lithospheric thickness and the depth to the mid-lithospheric discontinuity across the globe. This model is now available for download.
