Earth Sciences Summer School for Undergraduate Interns
at the University of Maryland in Summer 2001 (June 11 - August 18, 2001)

The University of Maryland Departments of  Meteorology , Geology, and the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center are offering Earth Science Summer Research Internships for Undergraduates, in collaboration with the  Laboratory for Atmospheres and the Laboratory for Hydrospheric Processes of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Goddard Space Flight Center. This program is designed to stimulate interest in interdisciplinary earth science studies by enabling selected undergraduate students to pursue specially tailored research projects in conjunction with University of Maryland scientific mentors.  This program is closely linked  to NASA/ Goddard's Summer Institute on Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences 2001.

Objectives:

The aim of this program is to introduce promising college students finishing their  Sophomore or Junior years to earth system science career options through hands-on educational research experiences at the University of Maryland, College Park.  Each student will be teamed with a University of Maryland faculty member with parallel scientific interests to jointly develop and carry out an intensive research project over the ten-week period.

Areas of research:
The Geology department conducts a broad range of research focussing primarily on structural, geochemical, and petrologic investigations of tectonic and metamorphic processes; mechanisms of sediment transport; sedimentary cycling; surface, near-surface, and deep-crustal fluid flow; and laboratory, geochemical and field studies of magmatic and ore-forming processes. The Washington area is a focal point for earth system science research. Major nearby earth-science oriented institutions include the Carnegie Institution, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the United States Geological Survey. Active collaborations, including the opportunity to attend seminars, etc., are strongly encouraged. All applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, age, national or ethnic origin or sex.

Grants available:
Participants in the program receive a stipend of $3,000,  housing, and the expenses of economy travel. The program must be completed to receive the total amount of the grant. To complete the program, both an oral report and a written report of your individual research effort will be required.

Application Procedures:
There is no formal application form. Submit an application in the form of a letter containing the following:
