The Bates mountains, like other ranges in the Basin and Range geologic province, are a fault-bounded horst block surrounded on two sides by graben valleys. In this case, the mountains consist of eroded Cretaceous welded-tuff and basalt.

Near the center, an organ pipe cactus stands near a saguaro. Descending the slope are Christian, Mike, Kelly, Marietta, Marion, and Diana.
