Sunrise at Sunset Crater. We were there so early that even the park staff was not in evidence. It was just us, the stellars jays, and the tuft-eared Albert's squirrels.
When Dr. Merck was a child in the mid 60s, his family visited this park. He remembers climbing to the rim of the crater (exhausting) and sliding down the loose cinders of the slope (fun, but dislodging roughly a ton of conders in the process.) In recent years, thankfully, the park has prohibited guests from climbing the cone to protect it from erosion.
