GEOL 388: Field Natural History of the Galápagos Islands

Summer Semester I 2004
The Galápagos Islands and Darwin:

Darwin was NOT the discoverer of the Galápagos : they had been known to Europeans since 1535 (and Incas since the 1400s). Had been shelter for pirates, whalers, sealers, etc.

Named after the tortoises which themselves were named after saddles. Also called Las Islas Encantadas (the Enchanted Islands: enchanted as in "bewitched" or "ensorcelled", NOT as in "wonderfully enchanting")

Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882)
