An introduction into the theory, application and operation of modern instrumental methods for chemical analysis in environmental, earth and materials science.Class members will use the mass spectrometry laboratories in the Department of Geology and the electron microprobe laboratory in the material science center. Students will be involved in the analyses of samples; this work will be done in combination with laboratory staff.
A general survey of the rocks and minerals composing the earth, its surface features and the agents that form them, and the dynamic forces of plate tectonics.
A brief tour of the solar system, where we explore the nature and evolution of the sun, planets, moons, comets, and other objects in the solar system.
