Brief Responses to Climate Change Denialism Statements

There Can't be Global Warming, Parts of the World are Cooling!

One section of the earth cooling does not change the fact that other parts of the earth, especially the oceans, are warming. Global warming is by definition “global”, and while some areas of the planet may be experiencing a slight drop in temperature, evidence suggests that an average rise in the key indicators of global warming such as sea level, sea surface temperature, and humidity may be the first of many ignored signs of global warming’s existence (Global Cooling - Is Global Warming still happening?).

A prime example of the so called “earth cooling” is the large-scale mode of climate variability, sometimes referred to as the Northern Hemisphere Annular mode. This mode is characterized by winds circulating counterclockwise around the Arctic. This has resulted in cooler temperatures around the mid-latitudes, such as Eurasia and North America, and warmer temperatures in the polar regions of Greenland and the Arctic Ocean (How cold winters fit in the big picture of global warming).

As we can see, although this may be an example of the “earth cooling,” this is not representative of the Earth as a whole.

Evidence collected by NCDC and NASA GISS indicates that there is a clear, consistent linear regression of temperature rise (What has Global Warming done since 1998?). Although there may be periods of stagnation or decline, the overall trend is a linear increase in global temperature.

This combined with the fact that 4 of the 5 hottest years on record were recorded in the last 5 years and that all of the 10 hottest years on record occurred in the past 2 decades, illustrates a clear pattern of global warming, not global cooling (What has Global Warming done since 1998?).
