Science and Global Change

Science and Global Change examines the foundations of scientific practice to explore global climate change and its impacts on human society, technology, and security, and the use of scientific knowledge and communication when making decisions for the future.

Exploring the interactions of the Earth's systems, SGC students examine how rapid environmental changes of the past resulted in crises for the inhabitants of the planet. They discover the fundamentals of climate science and the theoretical underpinnings of and observational evidence for global climate change and its implications for our future. Students investigate the potential responses that individuals, communities, and societies might make to build a resilient world of tomorrow.

The Practicum

Every member of the University of Maryland's College Park Scholars Program completes a practicum - an individual capstone project related to the STEM disciplines. Science and Global Change scholars engage in internships, independent research, or service-learning projects. Our spring semester culminates in the Scholars Academic Showcase - a grand public presentation of posters and oral presentations where participants both describe their experiences and illuminate how those experiences have influenced their thoughts on career paths and their place in society.

The COVID-19 crisis prevents us from celebrating student achievement in our usual manner. Instead, their work is being presented to the world through Science and Global Change's first virtual Academic Showcase. Participants' posters and presentations are now available to the public. Click poster thumbnails to view poster presentations directly. Next to each are links to brief oral presentation and contact information.

SGC students look forward to your feedback!
