Post Doctoral Associate Position in Deep Learning for Paleoclimatic Data Modeling

The Department of Geology at the University of Maryland (UMD) invites applications for a Research track position at the Postdoctoral Associate level for research on proxy system modeling using deep learning approaches. You will join an international, creative and collaborative research group, and actively lead a 3 year NSF funded project to develop, validate and apply next generation data models for tree-ring based paleoclimate observations. Opportunities for professional development include: leading scientific manuscripts, developing an online workshop, presenting at national and international conferences, undergraduate mentoring via an NSF REU and Geology departmental capstone thesis program, and networking and collaborating across the diverse and vibrant UMD climate, earth, environmental and geographical science communities.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated capabilities in data modeling using proxy observations and machine learning and statistical methods. Experience in observational paleoclimatology, paleoclimate modeling and data assimilation, and machine learning methods and applications are desirable.

Scientific Requirements:

Ph.D. in earth, environmental, climate, paleoclimate or data science. Excellent oral and written English communications skills. Fluency in Python & PyTorch in a Linux-based scientific computing environment will be essential.
