Rio Jemez Canyon wall

Location: Near San Ysidro, NM
Year: 1991
Merckslides catalogue number: 06-16979
Comments: During GEO660 we passed by the mouth of the Rio Jemez canyon. This photo of the canyon walls shows Bandalier Tuff filling in a former stream bed that had cut into the Entrada Sandstone. The modern canyon wall shows the ancient stream in cross section. This also nicely shows the tendency of igneous rocks to crack into columnar shapes while sedimentary rocks form layers.
