Our aim in the Laboratory for Mineral Deposits Research (LMDR) is to apply fundamental chemistry and physics to problems in economic geology, igneous petrology, and industrial mineralogy. The LMDR was founded over 30 years ago by Profs. Philip A. Candela and Ann G. Wylie, and now includes Dr. Philip Piccoli as well as students and other researchers.

Our laboratory has a long and active history of including high school, undergraduate and graduate students in our laboratory, field, and modeling research. Our fundamental philosophy of education and research includes the integration of students and faculty with varied educational and experiential backgrounds into our activities. We are interested in developing in students a firm foundation in understanding how chemistry, physics and mathematics, as well as the fundamentals of classical field geology, can be applied to the solution of fundamental problems in the Earth Sciences, with special emphasis on problems related to ore deposits and igneous and geothermal processes. Further, we train our students broadly so as to maximize their success in the many possible endeavors they may choose to pursue after leaving the University of Maryland.
