Graeme Bowles (B.S. 2003)

As part of his undergraduate senior thesis, Graeme performed experiments to evaluate the role of a consortia of bacteria on the breakdown of pyrite. The Kempton Mine, a coal mine that ceased operation in 1950, has been transmitting about 5 mgpd of acidic effluent into the headwaters of the Potomac River. Graeme designed batch experiments that utilized mine effluent, pyrite, and appropriate media so the bacteria could flourish.
