BrendanReI work on mapping and quantifying commonalities and differences among global models of shear velocity variations. These models specify the velocity of shear (S) waves at each point in the Earth’s mantle, and are an important constraint for mapping variations in temperature and composition that interact to produce mantle flow. By using cluster analysis, I can quantify differences in a quantitative and objective way. My long-term goal is to define geographic regions in which seismic structure is sufficiently similar that defining an average profile of shear velocity makes sense; to define these average profiles, I will use surface-wave dispersion maps and travel time measurements of long period body waves.
