Research Interests

My research focuses on the aqueous geochemistry of urban streams. Acidic precipitation can cause dissolution of concrete and other building materials. This process, sometimes referred to as "urban karst" is often accelerated in stormwater management systems. Liberated base cations from this reaction can alter ion loads and the pH of urban catchments. Other anthropogenic inputs, such as road salts, can also dramatically affect aqueous cation exchange, potentially increasing metal bioavailability. I attempt to quantify these processes occurring in the streams of Baltimore and Washington D.C.
