Research Interests
My research is all about understanding the processes that lead to the preservation or loss of information about past life and the environment in the rock record. This encompasses a wide range of subjects — from microbial ecology, to the kinetics and thermodynamics governing mineral growth, to sedimentology. Most recently, I have been applying the tools of field geology, microscopy, and optical spectroscopy to the examination of microbial-metazoan relationships as preserved in phosphate-rich rocks (including coprolites, concretions and nodules, and fossiliferous granular deposits). My lab, currently under construction, will be dedicated to this and many more facets of the study of Sedimentary processes, biological Activity, and Neogenesis effecting Destruction and Survival Of Fossil records through Time — the SAND(er)S OF Time Lab. Lab website coming soon!
