UMCP Programs that combine Geology with Teaching

Undergraduate: The Secondary Education-track of the Geology major

1. As part of the Geology-Education double major

Results in a B.S. degree with majors in Geology and Education and Maryland State Teaching Certification in secondary education. Entails 31 Education credits (with student teaching) and 41-43 Geology credits (including the Senior Thesis and Field Camp), and 23-24 supporting credits (including options for ASTR100, ASTR101, or AOSC200.) Supporting requirements include two semesters of Calculus and one each of Chemistry and calculus-based Physics.

2. As a stand-alone Geology major

Combines 12 credits of Education courses with a Geology major requiring 41-43 Geology credits (including the Senior Thesis and Field Camp), and 23-24 supporting credits (including options for ASTR100, ASTR101, or AOSC200.) Supportng requirements include two semesters of Calculus and one each of Chemistry and calculus-based Physics. This program will prepare the student for taking the Praxis exams, and, in some cases, will allow the graduate to start teaching in school districts with a critical lack of Earth Science teachers. Additional Education coursework plus student teaching is needed to meet the State requirements for certification.
